What to know about Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are common parasites that affect pets and humans, causing itching, allergic reactions, and potentially serious diseases. Fleas are tiny, wingless insects that can jump long distances, enabling them to move easily between hosts. Ticks are arachnids that crawl and attach to hosts for blood meals. They are notorious for transmitting serious diseases such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which can have severe health implications for both pets and humans. Both pests have complex life cycles involving eggs, larvae, and adults; fleas lay their eggs on the host, which then fall into the environment, while ticks lay their eggs directly in the environment.

Protect your Pets!

  • Regularly check your pet’s fur and skin, especially after they’ve been outdoors. Pay close attention to areas around the ears, neck, underbelly, and between the toes.
  • Use a fine-toothed flea comb to check for and remove fleas and flea dirt from your pet’s fur.
  • Bathe your pet regularly with a flea and tick shampoo.
  • Apply products like Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution directly to your pet’s skin. These treatments kill fleas and ticks on contact and provide month-long protection.
  • Give your pet oral medications such as Bravecto, NexGard, or Simparica, which kill fleas and ticks and prevent infestations. These are typically administered monthly or every three months.
  • Use collars like Seresto, which release small amounts of active ingredients that kill and repel fleas and ticks for up to eight months.

Prevention Tips for Fleas and Ticks

  • Regularly vacuum carpets, rugs, furniture, and pet bedding to remove flea eggs, larvae, and adults.
  • Wash pet bedding and removable furniture covers in hot water weekly.
  • Keep grass mowed and remove leaf litter, brush, and other debris where fleas and ticks can hide.
  • Apply flea and tick control products in your yard, focusing on shady areas and places where your pet spends time.
  • Keep pets away from tall grass, wooded areas, and heavy underbrush during peak tick season.
  • Use flea and tick preventatives throughout the year, as these pests can survive indoors even during colder months.

SAFETY AND SATISFACTION

You can be assured Superior Spray Service only uses the safest materials in our pest management practices to get the desired results. Customers will need to assist in making sure all entry points are sealed properly at windows and doorways and that any furniture is not blocking areas you would like us to treat.

After treatment, on occasion, a property owner may come across a stray bug or a couple of ants that have wandered in. Please remember that all of Florida is a tropical climate and that seeing a bug here and there does not necessarily constitute a pest problem. However, if you see multiple bugs or trailing ants, please feel free to contact us and we will be more than happy to take care of these problems as fast as possible.

It is best to save a sample of any pests that may have entered your home so that they may be identified correctly. For ants, this can be done by lightly touching the ant with a piece of Scotch tape. There are various ways that we will take care of different issues, so proper identification is very important.

Superior Spray Service also offers a spider control treatment for your outdoor lanai or pool areas. If you are having a problem with spiders or other pests at your home please contact us!
