Rodent Infestations - What you need to know

What to Know About Rodents in Florida

Rats and mice often invade homes in Florida when temperatures drop, vegetation disappears, and standing water dries up, driving them in search of food, water, or shelter. If your home has any damaged openings leading inside, it's susceptible to infiltration by these pests. Rats and mice pose significant dangers, being carriers of diseases and potential hosts for ticks, fleas, and mites. If you suspect a rodent infestation in your home, immediate action is essential.

How to Recognize a Rodent Infestation

Rodents love to nest in dark, secluded areas. Rats and mice gather nearby fabric, lint, hair and other materials to make their nests. If you notice shredded fabrics and paper products, it is likely some uninvited rats or mice have decided to move into your home. Foul odors, droppings, and gnaw marks on furniture, wood, and cables are all signs of a potential rodent infestation. Do not attempt to remove rats and mice from your home as do-it-yourself projects, and waiting to reach out for professional help may lead to more damage.

Types of Rodents in Florida

House Mouse

The house mouse is one of the most common home invaders. They are small; roughly six inches from head to the tip of their tail. They are often grey, black, or tawny brown in color. These intruders prefer to remain within a 30-foot diameter of their food source.

Sewer Rats

These specific rats go by many names: Parisian, wharf, Norway, and common. They have brown fur with lighter colored underbellies and feet, and tails that are shorter than their bodies. These specific rats are prominently hiding around in environments with water.

Roof Rats

Roof rats have black or gray fur with tails longer than their body, and hairless ears. These are also known as ship or house rats. They avoid water at all costs and prefer to climb rather than swim.

SAFETY AND SATISFACTION

You can be assured Superior Spray Service only uses the safest materials in our pest management practices to get the desired results. Customers will need to assist in making sure all entry points are sealed properly at windows and doorways and that any furniture is not blocking areas you would like us to treat.

After treatment, on occasion, a property owner may come across a stray bug or a couple of ants that have wandered in. Please remember that all of Florida is a tropical climate and that seeing a bug here and there does not necessarily constitute a pest problem. However, if you see multiple bugs or trailing ants, please feel free to contact us and we will be more than happy to take care of these problems as fast as possible.

It is best to save a sample of any pests that may have entered your home so that they may be identified correctly. For ants, this can be done by lightly touching the ant with a piece of Scotch tape. There are various ways that we will take care of different issues, so proper identification is very important.

Superior Spray Service also offers a spider control treatment for your outdoor lanai or pool areas. If you are having a problem with spiders or other pests at your home please contact us!
